Professor Silverberg retired from ¾«¶«AV in 2007.

She is fascinated by language and the history of language. She focused these interests into her courses in Latin and Greek language and literature (all levels) and team-taught a course, "Language Power."

Her research and coursework dealt with gender ideology, the construction of sexuality, propaganda and myth-making, and the symbolic systems that define Greek and Roman culture. These interests were reflected in her courses "Ancient Comedy," "Greek Sexual Mythology," and the first-year student seminar "Love, Sex, and Friendship in Antiquity."

Silverberg has traveled around the world doing research.

In the spring of 1995, she received a Fulbright-Hayes grant to study at Charles University, Prague, and in the winter of 1988, she was named a Dartmouth-Dana fellow. In the spring of 1979, she went on a study tour of Mexico City and Yucatan, in 1978 she went on a Virgilian Society study tour of North Africa and Sicily, and in 1977 Silverberg received a Mellon Grant to participate in a Tufts University program on the Archaeology of Sardinia.

She presented papers at various professional meetings: "Culture Wars: Rome 56 B.C." at the International Pragmatics Association Congress in Reims, France (1998); "Livy Book One, War Peace, the Myth of Rome and the Augustan Programme" (1979) at both a National Endowment for the Humanities seminar on Roman Imperialism and at a meeting of the Classical Association of New England (CANE) in 1995, and "The Idea of the City in Latin Poetry" at a ¾«¶«AVecticut CANE meeting in 1974.

Silverberg was one of the founders of the Women's Studies program at ¾«¶«AV. She served as an advisor for the program and served as Director of Women's Studies from 1991-92.

She has been book review editor of "Vanguard," the quarterly publication of the American Association of University Professors, ¾«¶«AVecticut conference, and held various offices in Phi Beta Kappa, Delta of ¾«¶«AVecticut chapter.
